Red Carpet Ready Oscar Party Ideas

In case you’re on a complete media blackout, or live on another planet, the 87th Annual Academy Awards take place on Sunday and we at Luvo cannot wait. The list of films has been pinned up in the office since the day the nominations were announced, for all the movie lovers to check off each one as they are viewed. We even have an Oscar pool going, for which I feel very confident.

If you’re planning to host an Oscar party, but the mess of how-to articles out there has your head spinning, we have a checklist that will have your soiree red carpet ready in 6 simple steps.

Dress code: comfortable with a hint of glam

Everyone likes to look and feel a little glamorous while watching the Oscars, but not everyone wants to avoid carbs all morning and squeeze into that hot little cocktail dress that’s been hiding in their closet all winter. Which is why we suggest having your guests come in their comfiest attire – PJs even – with the caveat that each guest must sport at least one sparkly or debonair accessory.

Create your own walk of fame

Who wouldn’t want to see their name emblazoned across the sidewalk on Hollywood Boulevard? Alternatively, your front entrance may be the next best thing. Create your own walk of fame by cutting out stars, scribing your guest’s names on them and securing them (with removable adhesive) to your front walkway, a tiled entrance or hardwood floor. I found some inexpensive replicas at a novelty store – they’re always a huge hit.

Pre-show photo op

Just because the paparazzi probably won’t be clambering at your front door, doesn’t mean this isn’t an occasion for some festive photos. Set up a focal point in the corner of your pad, with some thespian inspired accessories. Think bow ties, Oscar statuettes, popcorn and 3D glasses. I personally have some cheesy, life-size cut outs that I force encourage my guests to pose in.

Vote for your favorites

Invite everyone to arrive early for red carpet coverage. While watching all the correspondents repeatedly ask the glitterati who they’re wearing, have your guests fill out an Oscar ballot. Fandango.com has a one-page print out.

Simple, bit-sized snacks

Taking into account the champagne consumption that usually accompanies an Oscar party, you’ll want to provide some nibbles for your guests to nosh on in between segments. Luvo Burritos cook in 5 minutes, and sliced width wise, make a great appetizer. Stab each piece with a knotted bamboo toothpick to up the presentation.

Serve a nominee-inspired libation

Finally, you can’t host an Oscar party without offering your guests a signature cocktail. In keeping with this year’s nominees, we’ve concocted something inspired by Bennett Miller’s film Foxcatcher, nominated in 5 categories. Here’s how to make it.

Foxcatcher Fizz

Ingredients:
3 oz. chilled champagne
1/2 oz. cognac
2 dashes Angostura bitters
Squeeze of lemon
Touch of grenadine for color
1 star fruit sliced

Add the champagne, cognac, bitters and squeeze of lemon to your champagne flutes first and stir. Then add your grenadine, tipping the glass slightly as you pour so it pools on the bottom. Finish with a slice of star fruit. You could also create a kid friendly version using orange juice with just the grenadine and garnish.
