5 Tasty Things to Do With Apples

If you were one of the lucky ones to get out into the orchards this fall for the apple harvest then you’ve probably got at least a basket or two of these pretty orbs sitting in your kitchen. We all know apples aren’t just beautiful to behold; they’re also highly nutritious. They deliver lots of fiber, which helps fill you up, keeps everything moving smoothly (ahem) and promotes healthy cholesterol levels. The USDA also ranks them among the most anti-oxidant foods you can eat, which means they may help prevent and fight various forms of cancer.

While apples are gorgeous to behold with their natural red, pink, green and yellow hues, you’re going to want to gobble them up pretty quick before they start to turn into wrinkly apple zombies. Thankfully, there are so many savory and sweet ways to enjoy them. We all know about the classic apple pie and apple sauce, so if you’re interested in expanding your apple enjoyment possibilities, I suggest you try these tasty recipes:

Apples + Cheese

When I first heard of this combo it seemed like a strange idea to me, but when I finally tried it, I was hooked. Apples make a great addition to any charcuterie plate, or for a creative spin on the traditional grilled cheese sandwich. The sweet, crisp apples pair wonderfully with the salty creaminess of cheese. Try pairing slices of Granny Smith with a nice, high quality cheddar and you’ll see what I mean. You can also see how they do alongside ricotta cheese in our Apple Cinnamon Flatbreads.

Stuffed Apples

For a quick and nutritious dessert, try scooping out the cores of your apples and stuffing a mixture of oatmeal, brown sugar and spices inside, then bake them in the oven. Top with vanilla ice cream and mmmmm. This recipe from The Kitchn looks extra delicious.

Apple Slaw

Julienned green apples add a sweet twist to a tangy coleslaw, which you can use as a side or on top of your next burger or pulled pork sandwich. Bon Appetit has a tasty looking recipe that incorporates Greek yogurt for a healthy twist.

Apple Latkes (Potato Pancakes)

Fried potatoes are my kryptonite, and I do love a good potato pancake. Apples and potatoes must be made for each other, especially when you consider that pomme de terre (the French word for potato) means ‘apple of the earth’. Try this mouthwatering recipe for Hanukkah-worthy apple latkes from the New York Times.

Apple Salad

Chopped apples add extra crunch and flavor to many different kinds of salads from green to grain. Try adding some julienned Granny Smiths to your next spinach salad, or make Martha Stewart’s good-for-you Quinoa-and-Apple Salad with Curry Dressing.

How do you like your apples?
