Food Slang 101

While I was in sunny California this past weekend I visited the Luvo test kitchen to take a peek at some of the new products coming your way in 2015. During my thorough taste test I overhead a few of the chefs chatting about what they had eaten the night before. I’ve found myself asking them for a translation on more than one occasion, so I took the opportunity to put together a list of terms and definitions. Use this handy guide next time you’re trying to communicate with your foodie friends:

Adam and Steve: Two sausage links with toast.

Axle Grease: Butter.

Bag Fries (or ‘Lost Fries’): French fries that escape from their container and end up in the bottom of the bag.

Baled Hay: Shredded Wheat Cereal

Break it and Shake it: Add an egg to a drink.

Bronx Vanilla: Garlic

Bucket of Cold Mud: A bowl of chocolate ice cream.

Clean up the Kitchen: Make a hash.

Cremate it: Toast bread.

Cuke: Cucumber.

Dog Soup: Water.

Eats: Food.

Fixings: Toppings, extras, the bells and whistles of any meal.

Flat Top: Griddle.

Foreign Entanglements: Spaghetti or angel hair pasta.

Froyo: Frozen yogurt.

Georgia Pie: Peach pie.

Gorp: Trail mix (an acronym of good ‘ol raisins and peanuts).

Ho-Cho: Hot chocolate.

Hockey Puck: A well-done hamburger. 

Lupper: A meal between lunch and supper.

Keep off the Grass: No lettuce.

Make it Pucker: Add lemon.

Nosh: To eat.

Nuker: Microwave oven.

Pare: To remove the outermost skin of a vegetable or fruit.

Plump: To soak dried fruits.

Pu-pu platter: A Hawaiian term for mish-mash of hors d’oeuvres.

Put a hat on it: Add a scoop of ice cream.

Run it through the garden: Adding lettuce, onion and tomato to any sandwich or burger.

Sea Dust: Salt.

Science project: Spoiled food left on the counter or in the refrigerator.

SOS: Sauce on the side.

Spread: An impressive offering of food in buffet form.

Truss: To secure poultry with a string or skewer to hold its shape while cooking.

Tuber: Potato, root vegetable, yam.

Vermont: Maple syrup.

Victuals: Food or provisions.

Whiz: To blend anything in a food processor or blender.

Wreath: Cabbage.

(The) Works: Everything/all toppings typically offered with a dish.

Za: Abbreviation of pizza.

Zeppelin: Sausages.
