DIY Beauty Tips from Your Kitchen

Have you ever eaten a particularly delicious and saucy dish only to find yourself wanting to bathe in all its glory? I’ve been there too, but put down the guac-KALE-mole (not recommended for bathing, trust me) and try nourishing your body from the outside with these DIY treatments that use ingredients from your kitchen:

Body: Coffee is a great natural exfoliator, especially for dry winter skin. Mix ½ cup of coffee grounds with olive oil and apply the mixture in a circular motion to the body starting with rough areas like elbows and heels. For the ultimate finishing touch, moisturize with one of my favorite multi-purpose condiments: coconut oil. With its antioxidant, antibacterial and antimicrobial properties, coconut oil can be used as a shaving cream, makeup remover and moisturizer that not only provides natural sun protection but also sinks in quickly. Plus, it’s a great daily hydrator for all skin types, even oily!

Pro Tip: Combine with equal parts brown sugar or sea salt for even softer skin.

Face: Don’t mess around when it comes to your face. My grandmother’s golden rule: if you wouldn’t eat it, don’t put it on your skin. Her Helen Mirren-esque secret: cleanse and tone your skin daily with her #1 kitchen staple: apple cider vinegar. This antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal ingredient can easily be applied with cotton balls or make-up remover pads. If you have dry skin, dilute it with equal parts water.

My grandma also gave me an excellent deep facial cleanser recipe. If you’re not a stickler about sticky, mix equal parts honey and oatmeal, massage on your face, and rinse.

If you’re looking to try something a little spicier, treat yourself and some friends to a yummy DIY facial rooted in Indian tradition. These yogurt-based masques from Cook Republic will do the trick.

Pro Tip: Don’t forget to add slices of cold cucumber to the eyes to reduce puffiness and rehydrate the skin.

Hair: I have been conditioning my hair with this sweet spread for years. That’s right folks, it’s time to start nourishing your hair with raw honey. Honey contains important vitamins, minerals. It’s also antibacterial, has incredible healing properties, and acts as a humectant (attracts moisture). My favorite routine is this weekly hair mask recipe from The Every Girl that combines coconut oil and honey, making it the perfect remedy for out-of-control frizz and fly-aways.

Pro Tip: Rinse your hair with baking soda once a week to remove build up.

Teeth: This might sound gross, but it’s way tastier than sitting in traffic almost drooling on your $70 blouse with those icky strips coating your grill. Combine baking soda with some mashed up strawberries and give your teeth a scrub! Strawberries are packed with vitamin C, which has been known to decrease plaque and lift stubborn stains caused by a mildly unhealthy addiction to 4-shot Americanos. Crunchy and crispy fruits and veggies also naturally polish the teeth without harming or eroding enamel. They stimulate the production of saliva, too, which is essential for overall mouth health.

Pro Tip: No strawberries? Banana peels also contain essential minerals like potassium, manganese and magnesium, rub them on your teeth for 2 minutes 2-3 times per week, after 15 minutes brush teeth as usual.

Start small; treat yourself to one of these recipes every Sunday. Better yet, invite some friends over for an impromptu beauty potluck and get glowing!
