7 Tips for a Healthy Halloween

Did you know the average child accumulates up to 7,000 calories worth of treats on Halloween night? Do your kid a favor in more ways than one by getting rid of any and all candy corn as soon as it comes in the door. My personal bias against candy corn aside, there are many ways you can ensure a healthy and happy Halloween for everyone. And no, you don’t have to be that lame house on the block that gives out dental hygiene accessories while putting a huge damper on a holiday many kids anticipate all year.

Try these helpful tips for smart Halloween enjoyment, for kids and grown-ups alike (because we all know many of us will be dipping into those candy bags):

Prepare for the sugar rush: Cut down on other sugar sources leading up to the big day in preparation for the increase in sugar intake that’s bound to occur.

Set a good example: While full-sized chocolate bars were always a huge hit for me when I was a little trick-or-treater, they’re not the healthiest idea. Always go with fun-size and don’t buy too much so you can bypass leftover temptations. Stickers, crayons and other small toys also make great treats for handing out. I would have traded that dreaded candy corn for some cool stickers gladly.

Fuel up before heading out: Eating a wholesome meal with plenty of fiber and healthy protein can help ensure you don’t go overboard on the sweet snacks when you’re on the trick-or-treat trail.

Take the long way home: Leave the car in the driveway (weather permitting) and take the long way back so you can get some extra exercise into your Halloween night.

Inspect the candy haul ASAP: Not only to protect your child from dangerous items, but also to be sure you know exactly what they’re going to be eating. If anything looks strange or the ingredients make you feel nervous, get rid of it!

Hide the stash: If you’re concerned your little candy monster is going to eat their entire Halloween haul in one sitting, put it out of their reach and let them have a reasonable amount each day.
