Know Your Food: Curry 101

When it starts to get cold outside, not many things bring me as much joy as curling up with a hot, spicy and rich curry dish, even better when paired with a glass of my favorite sweet white wine.

Although several variations exist, the combination of spices, herbs and hot chilies in curry dishes produces an enticing scent most people can recognize as soon as it hits their noses. This is likely due to common main ingredients turmeric, coriander and cumin. Curry can be wet or dry, and can incorporate various combinations of vegetables, meats, fish, noodles or rice depending on many factors including region, religion and preference.

A Global Delight

Know-Your-Curry-Luvo-eat Originating in Southern and Southeast Asian cuisines and popular throughout the world, curry comes in many forms. In India, for example, curry dishes can vary significantly according to region, but some popular curry dishes include vindaloo (often flavored with wine and garlic), and rogan josh, which is a lamb curry with red sauce. In Thai cuisine, curries often include coconut milk and various regional flavor elements like shallots, garlic, shrimp paste, basil or lemongrass. In North America, Thai curries are most often categorized by color, including red curry, green curry and yellow curry. Curries can also be found in many other cuisines, including Japanese, Chinese and West Indian.

Eat Curry Now, Thank Me Later

If curry hasn’t made it onto your radar, I highly recommend it. If you’re up for a kitchen adventure, you can try making your own curry spice blend, or you can purchase pre-made blends that make it a bit easier (because after all, not everyone’s kitchen is equipped with a mortar and pestle). You can also take it for a test drive in our gluten-free Red Curry Chicken, Vegatable Coconut Curry Pilaf, Thai Style Green Curry Chicken, Organic Apple Coconut Burrito or Chicken Coconut Curry Burrito.
