Non-Powder Protein Smoothies

Our bodies need protein. Along with fat and carbohydrates, it’s one of the major macronutrients we need to function. Lately it seems that everyone is pro-protein, from athletes to average Joes, citing protein’s ability to do just about anything. Experts say you should get between 10% and 35% of your daily calories from protein. So how do you make sure you’re getting enough?

Unlike fats and carbs, protein is not stored by the body, so we need to consume it on a regular basis. Fortunately there are many foods that provide solid sources , including lean meats, eggs, tofu, beans, and, of course, protein powder. But what if you want to drink your protein? And do it naturally, without adding protein powder? Good news: it’s possible! And it will taste great. Here are a few new ways. Drink them in.

Coffee Banana Smoothie

This smoothie literally has it all: caffeine, fruit and protein—everything you need to start the day off healthfully. The protein comes from Greek yogurt and flax seed, and the coffee and banana provide familiar flavors for a morning smoothie.

Superfood Smoothie

This one uses a selection of chia and hemp seeds for the protein, along with kale, almond milk, dates and a banana for flavor, texture and a bit of sweetness. It’s perfect as a complement to any meal or for an afternoon snack.

Green Warrior Protein Smoothie

Got some time on your hands? Hope so, because this power-packed smoothie from ohsheglows.com has a lot of ingredients to prep and chop, but it’s worth it. Loaded with vegetables such as celery and cucumber, and with protein coming from hemp hearts and kale, this one is an ideal balance of tart and sweet. Definitely worth a blend.

Strawberry Almond Protein Dream Smoothie

As this recipe description notes, almonds pack a decent protein punch (and a fair amount of fat and calories!). They also taste pretty good. This smoothie is simple and satisfying, with only four ingredients—one of which is water, and the other two are in the title. What’s the fourth? You’ll have to click the link to find out.
