Is Vegetarian Always Healthier?

To eat meat or not to eat meat? Team #paleo and team #vegan can debate this one out but the one thing that both groups—and every health professional–can agree on is that we should be eating more fruits and vegetables.

Market research suggests that one third of Americans are trying to slip more vegetarian meals into their menu and sales of vegan products rose 6.3% in the past year. This sounds great in theory, but the last report on fruit and vegetable consumption found that just 14% of American adults consume the recommended minimum two servings of fruit and three servings of veggies each day. The number drops to 9.5% among adolescents.

At this point you may be wondering how people can be moving toward a more plant forward meal pattern but also eat so little of the fruits and veggies that should be the stars of this movement. Let’s break it down: Vegetarian and vegan food is not always as healthy as it sounds. After all, white pasta, white rice, potato chips, and many other forms of nutrition poor foods can fall into either camp so a move to eat more meatless fare can easily get derailed without proper planning.

On a recent supermarket stroll, I was a little mystified by the number of vegetarian meals that lacked good nutrition—things like whole grains and a serving of fruits and vegetables, which should form the basis of your vegetarian plate.

I love the idea of reducing meat consumption and I fully embrace the #meatlessmonday philosophy. Be a vegan before 6, like Mark Bittman, or a part-time vegetarian. No matter what your personal philosophy is, I hope you’ll join #teamFNV and eat more fruits and veggies. Lots of ‘em. Any way you like ‘em. If kale isn’t your thing, try arugula, spinach, or romaine. Not into blackberries? How about cherries, grapes, or apricots? There is a world of produce to explore and a world wide web full of recipes to play with. And for those nights when cooking is completely out of the question, you can count on Luvo. Our entrees have a full serving of fruits and vegetables. Because convenience should never mean compromising!
