What to Eat After You Overindulge

So you went a little overboard with the salty, fatty or sugary treats and you’re feeling bad about straying from the healthy eating path. You probably have a bit of a tummy ache too. Don’t fret! It happens to everyone, and there’s no reason you can’t make a U-turn. A few simple tips can help get you back on track and help your body recover from the indulgence. They can also help you alleviate those guilty feelings. Don’t beat yourself up too much, though. We all need to indulge from time to time and a few slip-ups aren’t going to completely derail your commitment to a healthy lifestyle. Try to resist the urge to fast or go on a strict cleanse–these can send your body into starvation mode, which is bad news for your metabolism, and will likely lead to even more overindulgence in the future.

Here’s what to do to spring back after an overly indulgent adventure:

Eat lots of fiber

Fiber not only fills you up and prevents overeating, but it’s also helps clean you out (if you know what I mean). Eat lots of veggies and whole grains to get a boost of this essential nutrient.

Get some lean protein

Eating lean protein is also a great way to fill up and cancel out any cravings for junk food that might still be haunting you. A baked chicken breast or fish filet topped with a homemade veggie salsa will give you a nutritious boost of protein and fiber in one go.

Keep yourself hydrated

Your body needs water to function at an optimal level and support its natural ability to flush out toxins. Be sure you’re staying adequately hydrated by keeping your water bottle full and sipping frequently throughout your day. Check out these spicy water recipes for some inspiration.

Enjoy some ginger

Ginger has been used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine to calm upset tummies and ease digestion. That’s why people often recommend drinking ginger ale when you feel queasy. Skip the sugary soda, steep some fresh ginger in hot water and enjoy a tummy-soothing sip.

Probiotics are your friend

Naturally fermented foods contain probiotics, which help balance the environment in your tummy and help improve your digestion. Buy some sauerkraut, kombucha, kefir or kimchi in the store, or try making your own kimchi and munch it regularly for good measure.

Try these tips for recovering after a night of overindulgence and you’ll feel better in no time. What are your tips for getting back on the healthy track? Share in the comments or over on Twitter at @luvoinc.
