Wrap City

You’d be hard pressed to find someone that doesn’t enjoy consuming their meals in wrapped form. Lettuce wraps, flatbread wraps, tortilla wraps, and pita wraps can be stuffed with pretty much anything your heart desires. Veggies, meat, cheese, spreads… the possibilities are endless and the outcomes often delicious. On top of that, the wrap is the ultimate grab-and-go food when you’re in a hurry.

Wrapping our food for consumption sans utensils is a beloved practice in many cultures. Take the Greek donair, the Mexican burrito, the Indian roti, and even the sushi roll. Where would our taste buds be without all of these amazing wrapped foods?!

The History of Wraps

Cue Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake. No… not that kind of wrap. Wraps have been part of human history since before the 1900s, perhaps most notably as a staple in Greek and Mexican food. The origins of the almighty wrap in North America are hotly contested, but who wouldn’t want to take credit for this incredible invention? One Connecticut waitress claims she invented the sandwich wrap when her restaurant ran out of bread, but a California restaurant chain documents their invention of the wrap a decade earlier. Which story is true? Who can be sure? Perhaps this will remain one of our greatest unsolved mysteries.

Pro Tips for Expert Wrapping

Think you’re the best in the wrap game? Try these pro tips and take your skills to the next level:

Prevent sogginess by adding a lettuce leaf layer between your wrap and its contents.

Make a lighter wrap by using greens in place of flatbreads or tortillas. Fresh green lettuce leaves or steamed collard leaves make excellent vessels. Need some ideas? This recipe is popular in my kitchen: Smokey Walnut Collard Wraps.

Make it extra nourishing by choosing whole grain or sprouted grain wraps so you get all the natural goodness and fiber content of the grains.

Prevent spillage by doubling up your corn tortillas so they can stand the test of extra salsa.

Heat up your wrap before you stuff it (if you’re using flatbreads or tortillas) to allow for easier rolling.
